Leaving your job? Here are some exit interview no no’s!

There comes a time in most people’s lives when they have to leave their jobs to try something different. This could be by choice or not. However, when faced with that time of your life, do you choose to burn bridges or not? I know people would say it depends on the circumstance surrounding your departure from that particular office and therefore a decision on how you want to approach your exit interview might be hugely relative. A recent report by the Insider has identified 11 things you shouldn’t say when leaving a job. However, I have condensed these to 8 points as below: 

  • Don’t get too personal. Granted you might have bad feelings about your managers and co workers but be careful what you say at your exit interview. That’s not a place to vent as feedback may be passed on. Ofcourse feel free to discuss negative points but with limitations.

  • Don’t brag about how excellent you are and how it’s going to be a huge loss to the company that you’re leaving. Trust me, at that point it no longer matters to anyone, not even you.
  • Don’t wish them bad or wish the company and team to fail just because you’re leaving. You may be thinking and wishing this inside you but please, keep your thoughts within. It’s not necessary information at an exit interview.
  • Try to avoid strong and spiteful words when referring to the company and petiole. Give constructive criticism when you can.

  • Don’t gossip or point fingers. It’s not useful or beneficial to anyone. It also makes you look very unprofessional.
  • Don’t focus on trivial issues. Stick to critical points and provide constructive critical where posible.
  • Try not to make other people you’re leaving behind feel like losers by boasting about how great your new opportunity is.

  • Try not to make it all about the money. I would add, except ofcourse you had been due a raise which wasn’t forthcoming and the company is willing to negotiate and increase to prevent you from leaving.
