Online Working – Amazon files lawsuit against rogue online reviewers

With the accessibility and ease of using the internet, so many people are having to rely on the internet as a source of income, either through the sales of their own products and services, online marketing and even online reviewing as is the case I am about to discuss.

According to Yahoo News, “Online retail giant Amazon has started legal action against 1,114 individuals it says have posted fake reviews on the site.” This comes as Amazon identified that some of the reviewers on its site were posting fake reviews and “offering five-star ratings and positive write-ups on the U.S. version of the site for as little as $5 (£3.23) each” using the online market place Amazon filed the lawsuit last Friday in Washington,

It is worthy of note though, according to the Yahoo News website that Amazon is not suing as the company “bans the use of fake reviews in its terms and conditions.”  but is suing the yet to be identified individuals who are responsible for this. Ultimately, they will have to bear the brunt of their actions as they are being sued individually.

According to an Amazon UK source:

“A very small minority of sellers and manufacturers attempts [sic] to gain unfair competitive advantages by creating false, misleading, and inauthentic customer reviews for their products on

“While small in number, these reviews threaten to undermine the trust that customers, and the vast majority of sellers and manufacturers, place in Amazon, thereby tarnishing Amazon’s brand.

“Amazon strictly prohibits any attempt to manipulate customer reviews and actively polices its website to remove false, misleading, and inauthentic reviews. Despite substantial efforts to stamp out the practice, an unhealthy ecosystem is developing outside of Amazon to supply inauthentic reviews. Defendants’ businesses consist entirely of selling such reviews”.

This brings about the need to be careful with any paid or unpaid activities we carry out online. Online working is good and has served as a second or even main source of income to a lot of people. However, there is a need to be careful, have integrity and stay legitimate when working online.
